Established in 1845, Searsons of Baggot Street has stood at the heart of Dublin life for nearly two centuries. From its origins as a Victorian grocer and wine merchant to its modern incarnation as one of Ireland’s most celebrated gastropubs and whiskey destinations, Searsons remains a cornerstone of hospitality in Dublin 4.
The Early Years (1845–1923)
First licensed in October 1845, the premises at 42–44 Upper Baggot Street served Dublin’s thriving professional and merchant classes. Its Victorian character included a traditional snug and refined architectural detailing that still influences the building today.
The Searson Era (1923–1961)
Acquired by William and Michael Searson in 1923, the pub became a vibrant social hub for journalists, rugby supporters attending Lansdowne Road, and literary figures of the era. Under William Searson, the venue built a reputation for warmth, character and conversation.
The Chawke Family Revival (2012–Present)
Reopened and restored in 2012 by the Chawke family, Searsons was carefully revitalised to honour its historic heritage while elevating the experience to modern premium hospitality standards. Today it stands as one of Dublin’s most recognised destinations for food, whiskey, sport and live entertainment.
